David has had the good fortune to study under a number of great teachers, both here in Australia and overseas. In 2010 he began running classes to share what he had been taught. In these classes he aims to expose students to several different methods of tackling a realist subject, and equip them with the technical skills required to do this.

See below for a list of current classes. Please email David at: david@artofdavidcostello.com if you have any questions.

Current Classes

Life drawing: a contemporary adaption of classical methods parts 1 & 2

Working from a life model, students learn various systems for capturing the human form with a view to creating a lively, yet realistic result. Pose duration increases from short to long as the course progresses, allowing students to develop a fully rendered drawing in the style of the old (and new!) masters. Artistic anatomy is also discussed, to aid with the drawing process.

Run through the Visual Arts Access Programme at the Australian National University, Canberra.

The still life in oils - a classical atelier approach parts 1 & 2

This course is designed to expose students to the entire process of the still life painting process. Drawing on historical examples David discusses object selection, composition and lighting, thumbnail sketches, colour studies, preparatory drawings, materials selection and, of course, painting techniques.

Run through the Visual Arts Access Programme at the Australian National University, Canberra.

Portraiture - A Classical Approach

This class teaches a methodical, tonal approach to portraiture, based on the techniques of the great realist portrait painters of the past. Working directly from the model over several sittings, we will aim for a fully modelled likeness using pencil, charcoal or monochrome oil paint. In the second half of the course we will work with colour. Best suited for those with some drawing/painting experience.

Run through the Visual Arts Access Programme at the Australian National University, Canberra.
